From the Beginning...

I've told you about this book before.  Lark Crafts new book Art Quilt Portfolio "People & Portraits" by Martha Sielman.  It is wonderful - filled with eye candy.  If you have ever had the desire to make an art quilt depicting a person or people, this book is a must for your library.  Every page is filled with inspiration.  I'm one of the featured artists.  I'm still pinching myself - can it be true?!?!?

I began quilting in 1994 at the suggestion of my daughter, Jennifer.  She had made some quilts and thought I might enjoy making one too.  I knew how to sew - I decided to give it a try.  I had never made nor thought of making a quilt before.  I bought a book to learn the basics.

This is the first quilt I ever made.  Queen sized and made of upholstery fabrics - oh brother!  The pattern is called "Around the World."

I was on a roll.  I made bed quilts for everybody in my family - siblings, children, grandchildren, etc.

By 1999, I'd had my fill of bed quilts - I mean, how many beds does one have?!  I began to design my own wall hangings.  I made a number of abstract type wall hangings.

A Case of the Dizzies

It was time for me to express myself in another way...telling my story...I doubted anyone else would care, but for me it was therapeutic.   Menopause - at least one good thing came of it - this quilt.

 Mood Swings (2003)

After that, I began telling my story in earnest.  I won't bore you with the details...you can go to my website to see more.

This piece entitled "Should I?" is one of my favorites - mainly because Jennifer posed for me.  (I'm the figure in the background.)  We all have a "should I" story - you know, should I leave a job (or not), a relationship, a dwelling, you get the idea...

"Should I?" (2009)

along comes 2012 and I'm invited to be part of Lark Crafts publication "Art Quilt Portfolio: People & Portraits."  It's a dream come true...I'm playing with the big kids now!

If you would like to win a copy of this fabulous book, leave a comment (with a valid email address).  I will draw a random winner on July 7, 2013.  Who knows - it could be YOU!  Good Luck.

Island Lighthouse

There are tons of lighthouses in Nova Scotia and PEI.  While there, we were on a quest to find as many as we could.  Some were very nice.  Others rather mundane - just serviceable - rather plain vanilla, if you know what I mean.

This one is a beauty!  Even though it was a gray rainy day - the white on the lighthouse really pops.

Joy RIde...

Every Sunday morning my husband and I take a long bike ride.  It's something we have been doing together for years - such a joy!

Shoes, Shoes and More Shoes!

Oh happy day, last Saturday our local Goodwill Stores had a 50% off sale.  I found some great shoes for my shoe tree.

Waterproofing applied - once dry, holes will be drilled.  Next stop - my shoe tree!

I could never in a million years wear/walk in such shoes - could you?

Through the Garden Gate

I've always wanted a picket fence around my yard.  The homeowner's association rules in my neighborhood do not permit fences.   Such a pity -  I think they are quite charming.

Favorite Things...

When I travel, I'm always on the hunt for art which I can take home with me.  I found this delightful clay mug at a gallery in Victoria by the Sea, PEI.  It now sits on a table in my studio.  I love this little guy!  What favorite thing have you found and brought home with you?

A Stitch in Time...

On a recent trip to Elgin IL, I stayed at a hotel off the interstate.  Behind it was an industrial park.  It was the perfect place for a run in the early morning - no traffic!  Surprisingly, there was a stretch of road surrounded by grassy lawns and beautiful flowering trees.  I could hardly wait to get back to the hotel to fetch my camera.  This photo was taken on Saturday morning.  By Monday morning, all of the petals were gone.  Talk about being in the right place at the right time!!

Dandelion....

Ever since I was a kid I thought dandelions were pretty.   As an adult, I still think they are pretty as long as they grow in someone else's yard!

This little beauty was found in my daughter's backyard.

Jail House Rock...

This is one of my favorite photos of my husband, Richard.   I have taken tons of candid shots of Richard.  We have been married long enough that it's difficult to buy gifts for him - (what could he possibly need besides the love of a good woman which he already has!)  I make a yearly calendar for him which he loves.

This is the page for June 2013.  Original photo taken in the jail house in Sherbrooke Village, Nova Scotia.

He's such a good sport!
