The Sketchbook Project 2012

A couple of months ago, I signed up to participate in The Sketchbook Project 2012.  Each participant receives a blank sketchbook that will be exhibited on the 2012 tour and catalogued permanently in the Brooklyn Art Library.

As you know, I've been experimenting with surface design techniques.  I used those techniques on the sketchbook pages and subsequently altered many of the pages.  Some of the backgrounds you may recognize from previous posts.  Others are completely transformed - hard for you (and me) to detect what's underneath.

The each sketchbook page measures 5" wide by 7" high.  The book was stapled together - I took the staples out to work on the cover and pages.   To reconstruct the sketchbook, I used a simple 5 hole pamphlet stitch (knotted on the inside).  The sketchbook will not lie open flat, of course!  It was necessary to make a strap with magnetic snaps to ensure that it will stay closed while it tours around the country.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I will show you the inside pages.

paper/fabric, charcoal pencil, gesso, acrylic paint, image transfer, zigzag stitch, hand stitched

printed image, acrylic paint, paper, acrylic ink

(1) masking tape, molding paste, image transfer, acrylic paint

(2) acrylic medium, acrylic paint, paint pens, paper; (3) water color, Krylon spray web, found objects

(4) water color, gesso, paper, hand carved stamp, stamped image on water color paper; (5) acrylic glaze, acrylic paint, misted rubbing alcohol, bleach, stenciled, molding paste

(6) acrylic paint, Saran wrap, rubber stamped, Lazertran image transfer, paint pens; (7) acrylic paint, rubber cement resist

(8)  rubbing alcohol dripped over acrylic paint; (9) water colors, stenciled, rubber stamped, paper, image transfer

(10) water color, image transfer on tissue paper, acrylic skin; (11) water color, freezer paper resist

(12) water color, acrylic paint, stenciled; (13) acrylic paint, crackle paste, paper

Go to Pink Saturday for more inspiration!

Do you have, or know where to find, the itinerary for the show? Is it coming to Oregon? I'd love to see it....wow! so much inspiration in one place. Your book is wonderful!!!! I would love to see it in person, photos usually do not do the work justice. You have explored so many interesting textures and techniques. Thanks for sharing.

This is a lovely sketchbook. I'm afraid to say mine will remain intact, not brave enough to alter it that much! Well done in going for it with yours and look forward to more posts about it....regards ann.
(OH...nearly forgot...how did you get the Badge for Sk P 2012 on your blog??)

It is always exciting to come and visit and see what new textures you have mixed up for us to see! Your book is wonderful! When I studied watercolor, we had such a book to keep all of our different methods like with salts, etc. It is a great way to remember all you have done!
HPS!

Wow,
Your journal is gorgeous. You are braver than me, I just knew I couldn't keep a commitment to fill a sketchbook. I admire your commitment and your work.

I actually have that site bookmarked. I art journal, as you know, and I do a sketch challenge every other week, so i thought doing this would be so cool!!
But, by the time I found it, I realized I had to have it in too soon for me. Unless I read it wrong, so I HOPE they do it next year too!!
I LOVE every page you've shown!
You know you are awesome!

You see??? It is true. I have finally lost my mind. I thought it said you GOT the book in OCTOBER! What was I thinking?

Like I said, I have it bookmarked, and I will get there ASAP, because I want to spend the most time I can on my book!!!

And I love your idea of taking it apart. It is sooo much easier to do that way!!

AND who doesn't LOVE a new sketch book!! I know I do!!

Thank you for taking the time to write!! You are sooo awesome!!

that's so amazing! love your sketchbook. it's so creative!!! I tried once to make handmade b-day card and it took me about 4 days of torture. I mean, I enjoyed it, but I had no idea that it will take so long to paint it, cut some pieces, glue it together... etc... I wish I could do it with less pain :)
Have a wonderful day!
