I like to work big. My quilts generally measure 51x51 - which to me is large. I thought it would be fun to make something smaller. These sweet pieces measure 3x3.
Here's what I did:
Lutradur "painted" with water soluble crayons; sandwiched with light weight batt and cotton backing; draw a quick sketch of a fanciful bird (a gel pen works best); free motion stitch with black thread
fill in the blanks with colorful threads; (Lutradur is stable enough that I do not use a hoop to stitch)
enhance with beads, buttons, etc.; cut down to size; zigzag stitch thin rattail around edges
apply black gesso to top edges and sides of 3x3 framed canvas
tie knots in the ends of rattail and staple (heavy duty stapler) to top back of frame
Use matte gel medium to adhere fabric square to canvas frame
I'm keeping one for myself and gifting the other to a dear friend for her birthday.

You had a great idea and carried it out beautifully. I am sure your friend will be delighted to receive this neat gift. I love quilts in any fashion, shape or from.
These are wonderful! Did you like working with the lutradur? Where is the best place to purchase it? I got a book from the library on it and have been wondering about the "how to's".
Another wonderfully artsy post!
I would imagine the larger quilts are more useful when it comes to the cold, but your little minis are so cute. I love the whimsy of the birds and the colors. You certainly have a wonderful talent and it shows no matter what the size.
Happy Pink Saturday, Char

these are really neat. I think your process is fascinating. I love multiple step pieces, the way the work is layered adds so much depth without overwhelming the eye.
